One-hundred-year-old carignan.
18-month ageing in a French oak barrel.
Artisan “vi de la vila” (Catalan for “village wine”) from Gratallops, DOQ Priorat, produced from Carignan grapes grown at our hundred-year-old vineyard. The output per vintage is 600 bottles. Some truly unique items.
The 2022 vintage was the first of the drought that began in September 2021, when the rains suddenly stopped. The moderate winter, the warm spring and a very hot summer made us pay attention to the evolution of the grape. The harvest was brought forward a few weeks and, thanks to the underground water accumulated before the drought, the grapes came out very well and not at all affected by the heat of the summer. Despite the shorter ripening than other years, it was very harmonious. The luck of the Rocapoll vineyard is its north-faced orientation (leveraging the dawn light) and its location: height of more than 320 metres / 1,000 ft above sea level, on the second highest hill range of Gratallops (following the hill of the Hermitage of Consolació which has elevations of over 500 metres / 1,600 ft). This exposure subjects the vineyard to a constant current of wind, so essential during the long days of dog heat.
